Mark your calendars for September 19th, as Proud 2B Parents launches the first LGBT+ Parents/Carers Day. This special day aims to honor the achievements, recognize the challenges, and celebrate the rich diversity of LGBTQ+ families. The event, with its resonant tagline – "Creating a future where our community is seen, heard, and fully acknowledged" – will bring visibility to all families, highlighting their journey and resilience.

Why September 19th?
The choice of this date is not accidental; it carries historical significance that spans back to a key moment in 1976. On this day, Spare Rib, a pioneering feminist magazine, published a feature that would forever change the landscape for lesbian parents in the UK. The article called for greater action and visibility for lesbian mothers facing discriminatory legal battles over child custody. This public advocacy not only shed light on the struggles of non-traditional families but also spurred much-needed objective research into LGBT+ parenting, dismantling harmful stereotypes along the way.
One figure instrumental in challenging these misconceptions is Professor Susan Golombok. In her groundbreaking book, Modern Families: Parents and Children in New Family Forms, she meticulously traces the journey of LGBTQ+ families through over 40 years of research. Golombok’s work explores the rich tapestry of family structures that have emerged since the 1970s, pushing back against outdated ideals of the ‘nuclear family’. Her research underscores a powerful truth: the strength of a family lies in the love, support, and commitment shared between its members, regardless of whether they fit traditional molds.

Changing definitions of family
During the 1970s, the image of a 'proper' family was dominated by the heterosexual nuclear model – married parents and biological children. But societal changes, including advances in reproductive technologies, the rise in single-parent households, and the growing visibility of LGBTQ+ families, have since reshaped the concept of what a family looks like. In fact, today, non-traditional families are more common than ever, showcasing the beauty and richness of diverse experiences.
Golombok’s extensive research also reveals something profound: children raised by LGBT+ parents, whether born through assisted reproduction or adoption, often thrive in environments filled with love and dedication. These families, united through a deep desire for children, overcome societal hurdles and challenge the myth that children need traditional gender role models to flourish.
The fight for recognition and rights
The road to acceptance for LGBTQ+ parents has been long and fraught with challenges. In the past, same-sex parenting was vilified, with lesbian mothers in particular facing brutal custody battles. Courts often ruled against them, arguing that their sexual orientation made them unfit to raise children. It was a gross reflection of the societal biases that held sway during that time. However, as awareness and advocacy have grown, laws have shifted in many countries. Today, LGBTQ+ parents can marry, adopt, and legally build families together. Yet, these rights, hard-won in many parts of the world, are not universal. In some regions, LGBTQ+ relationships remain criminalized, underscoring the continued need for activism.
By commemorating September 19th, Proud 2 b Parents is pushing for greater visibility and understanding. “This day is about acknowledging the struggles faced by our community, highlighting the ongoing need for equality, and breaking free from harmful stereotypes. It’s about building a future where everyone is seen, heard, and fully acknowledged,” says Matt Taylor-Roberts, Founder and Managing Director of Proud 2 b Parents.
