Queer As Folk Creator Admits the Show Was Difficult For His Parents

Russell T Davis, the veteran TV producer behind Queer As Folk, has admitted in a new interview that the ground-breaking 1999 show was somewhat difficult for his parents to watch at the time.

Speaking with The Big Issue ahead of his new show Years and Years, Davis looked back on his remarkable career, noting “Queer as Folk was quite difficult for (my parents) in the sense that a lot of people, especially of their age, just saw it as porn.

“The day it was transmitted was my mum’s 70th birthday and some people didn’t come to her party because I was going to be there. Not because they hated me, but they were embarrassed.

“Maybe they wished there wasn’t nakedness and gay sex on screen, but they never ever said that to me. They just said they loved me no matter what.”

The series premiered when Section 28 was still in effect throughout the UK. The homophobic law forbid local authorities and schools from even mentioning homosexuality, while the age of consent for gay people was higher than it was for straight people.

The show touched on issues of same-sex parenting, recreational drug use, and living with HIV/AIDS.
