Quick tips for shining at work

April 30, 2018

1. Don’t just do your job…

… do your job well! Find out where you can put in extra effort, or what needs more work. Don’t just do what’s asked of you.

2. Be professional

Keep personal texts and emails until the end of the day, stay serious and focused, and act professionally in all situations. Follow the rules, be courteous, friendly, and tactful.

3. Keep a positive attitude

Don’t go overboard, but keep cheerful and positive – no one likes to be dragged down by a “Debbie Downer”.

4. Step outside what’s expected of you

Take initiative, consider better ways you could do your job, find a way for your department to be more effective, make suggestions to your boss. Don’t get cocky, but don’t be lazy either.

5. Stay motivated on your own, and work well in a team

It’s equally important to work well on your own without any directions as it is to work cohesively in a team. Examine how do you work with others, how your working relationships are, how good you are at communicating, where you’ve succeeded and failed before when working in a team. It can even be worth asking for feedback from some of your colleagues.

6. Know what your boss expects of you

You don’t have to be best friends with your boss, but it Is a good idea to build some kind of a relationship with them, work out what they want and what they expect from you.

7. Take opportunities to build new skills

If you’re doing the same job over and over again you can easily stagnate. A good way to fight this is a volunteer to learn new skills, take on some additional training or education when your employer offers them.

8. Mentor new employees

Helping the new employee build skills and fit into the workplace can be tremendously rewarding, it will also get you noticed by your boss.
