Religious groups attempt to overturn same-sex marriage in Taiwan

In May of last year, the small island country became the first in Asia to rule in favour of same-sex marriage. LGBT+ advocates had hoped the ruling would become law in Taiwan by the end of 2017, but the legislation has faced several roadblocks.

Several religious groups have attempted appeals to the ruling, with the Alliance of Taiwan Religious Groups for the Protection of the Family submitting a petition to the courts this week. This is their second attempt at an appeal after their first was thrown out in January.

The leader of the Alliance, Change Shou-yi, has said, “We ask the High Administrative Court judges to have the conscience and moral integrity to rule on our appeal through their own independent stance, and not cave in to political influence and forces of intimidation, and to reach a decision conforming to the freedoms and values of our democratic society.”
