Richard Buckley, a fashion editor and “beloved” husband of designer Tom Ford for 35 years, has died aged 72, the company said in a statement.

After a prolonged illness, Mr. Buckley died peacefully in his Los Angeles home on Sunday with Ford, 60, and their 8-year-old son Jack by his side.

Friends of Buckley – including English designer and godmother to their son, Stella McCartney – have paid tribute.

“What a gentle man; grace and charm filled the room when he was in it,” McCartney wrote.

“His intellect and passion for knowledge always blew me away, and the sparkle in his eyes dove so deep into your heart each time you were blessed enough to feel it.

“He was so loved, so respected and so madly and passionately dedicated to you, Tom and Jack, that his life was fully complete.

“We love you, Richard, and we will miss you so very much. Your fight has ended but you will always live on in our hears,” she concluded.

According to ABC News, Ford met Buckley in 1986 and were long-time partners until 2014 when same-sex marriage was legalized in the US.

David Furnish, husband to Elton John, also paid tribute on Instagram, describing Buckley as a “brilliant writer and editor, devoted father, and loving husband of Tom Ford.”

Buckley began his journalism career at New York Magazine in 1979 and made his name as an editor for various outlets including Vanity Fair, Mirabella, Vogue Hommes International, and Women's Wear Daily.
