Romania Rules in Favour of Equal LGBT+ Rights Ahead of Referendum

Romania’s Constitutional Court has ruled in favour of granting LGBT+ people equal rights, reports Balkan Insight.

The ruling states that same-sex couples should “benefit from…. legal and juridical recognition of their rights and obligations.”

This ruling comes just a week before the country is set to hold a referendum on whether to limit the constitutional definition of a family to heterosexual, married couples.

A yes vote would create a serious block to the country ever achieving marriage equality.

LGBT+ activists remain hopeful that this ruling is a positive sign.

Teodora Ion-Rotaru, from the gay rights group Accept, said: “It says same-sex couples should have the same legal rights as heterosexuals.”
