Elton John Aids Foundation banned in Russia

On Thursday, Russian authorities prohibited the Elton John Aids Foundation (EJAF), which is dedicated to HIV/Aids prevention, citing its support for LGBTQ+ rights as the reason for this action.

The organisation, established in 1992 by the British singer and songwriter, finances HIV treatment programs in various countries, including Russia. It also champions the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals, who have endured years of severe persecution in Russia.

Russia’s prosecutor general’s office labeled the EJAF as an “undesirable organisation,” preventing it from operating in Russia and potentially subjecting its staff and collaborators to criminal charges, according to ‘The Guardian’.

The prosecutor general’s office accused the foundation of endorsing “non-traditional sexual relationships, western family models, and gender reassignment.”

According to the prosecutor’s office, EJAF held “negative attitudes” toward nations that “support traditional spiritual and moral values” and claimed the foundation had joined a campaign to “discredit Russia” following its 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

“When a musician supports those promoting democracy, it becomes propaganda. And with Elton John leading the charge, it’s more than just anti-Russian propaganda,” read the statement.

The Russian enforcement agency added, “In our country, the British foundation works closely with non-profit organisations deemed as foreign agents.”

This decision adds to the ongoing challenges faced by human rights groups aiding Russians with HIV and Aids. Rospotrebnadzor, the federal agency overseeing public health and consumer rights, reports over 1.2 million people in Russia are HIV-positive, marking the highest per capita rate in Europe.

Since 2023, the country has grappled with persistent medication shortages, hindering many patients' access to essential tests and life-saving antiretroviral treatment.

The oppression of LGBTQ+ individuals in Russia has intensified since the 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Authorities recently classified what they termed an “international LGBT public movement” as extremist, resulting in the arrest and imprisonment of numerous LGBTQ+ individuals nationwide.

John, who has a substantial following in Russia, has long advocated for LGBTQ+ rights there. In 2014, after several sold-out performances in the country, he published an open letter criticising Russia’s “gay propaganda” law and offered to introduce Vladimir Putin to LGBTQ+ community members.

The following year, the Kremlin announced that the Russian president personally contacted John to extend an invitation to meet—a move motivated by a prank where two comedians, impersonating Russian officials, tricked the singer into a phone call that was later shared online.
