Sarah McBride claps back at Republican’s insulting misgender

A House committee hearing on arms control and international security was abruptly ended yesterday after Republican Rep. Keith Self from Texas deliberately used the wrong pronouns for trans member Sarah McBride (D-DL) and refused to correct himself when challenged.

The hearing, which was conducted by the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe on Tuesday, began like any typical committee session but soon took a negative turn. “I now recognize the representative from Delaware, Mr. McBride,” Self stated, eliciting gasps from other committee members.

According to ‘LGBTQ Nation’, without hesitation, McBride responded courteously, “Thank you, Madame chair.”

The ranking Democrat of the subcommittee, Rep. Bill Keating (MA), interrupted the session to reprimand Self for his discourteous and disrespectful remark.

Keating requested Self to restate how he addressed Ms. McBride, and Self confirmed, unapologetically, that he had referred to her as “Mr. McBride.”

“Mr. Chairman, you are out of order,” Keating remarked. “Mr. Chairman, have you no decency? I mean, I have come to know you a little bit, but this is not decent.”

Self attempted to downplay the incident and redirect attention back to the hearing, but Keating insisted that he introduce McBride correctly, “lest this meeting be adjourned.”

Consequently, Self followed through by adjourning the hearing. As the meeting dispersed, Keating was seen giving McBride a supportive pat on the shoulder.

LGBTQ+ rights advocates and supporters have expressed discontent with the Democratic party for their lackluster response to the Trump administration's actions against the LGBTQ+ community.

A recent letter from the Human Rights Campaign, GLAAD, and other organisations urged Democrats to enhance their efforts in protecting LGBTQ+ rights.

Many commend Keating for his readiness to defend McBride, who frequently endures ridicule from her colleagues.

Had Keating ignored Self’s misuse of pronouns, the hearing might have continued normally, but it would have also established a precedent of accepting such discrimination. Instead, Keating voiced his objection, demonstrating that Self’s insult would not go unchallenged.

Keating offered Self an opportunity to apologise, rectify his error, and proceed with the meeting, but Self declined to do so.

“I was disappointed that the Chair decided to end a committee hearing early,” McBride stated on Tuesday night. “I was prepared to proceed with my inquiries regarding the Subcommittee on nuclear nonproliferation and US support for Democratic allies in Europe.”

Self commented with a post on X, stating, “It is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female.”
