Can ultra-processed foods be addictive?

A new review in Pharmacological Research brings together more than two decades of research on how foods high in refined sugar and saturated fat may affect the brain and behavior.
Studies in animals and humans suggest that highly palatable foods can activate the brain’s reward system and trigger dopamine release. Researchers have also observed addiction-like behaviors, including bingeing, intense cravings, tolerance and withdrawal.
The findings add to the growing debate over whether some ultra-processed foods could be considered addictive, and what that might mean for how we understand food and eating behavior.
