Scooby-Doo Creator Reveals Velma Was “Explicitly Gay”
July 14, 2020James Gunn, creator of the live-action Scooby-Doo films in the early 2000s, revealed that he wrote Velma Dinkley as “explicitly gay” but the studio blocked his choice of Velma’s sexuality.
On Twitter, one user asks the 53-year-old director to “Please make our live-action lesbian Velma dreams come true,” to which Gunn responded, “I tried!”
He explained that “In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script. But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down.” The film was distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
According to Gunn, the version of the movie that was shot had ambiguous references to Velma’s sexuality but all of them where edited out in the version that was released. These ambiguous deleted scenes are available in a script online.
As ‘Daily Mail’ reports, some fans pushed back on his claims, saying it was a “lie” while suggesting he was referring to a cut scene in which Velma danced in a female locker room.
Though he clarified “She’s gay in the 1st draft. It’s not one line,” adding her first he “shared this 12 years ago.”
He continued to say the locker room scene was not what he was referencing but that Velma “serenades Daphne. And she kisses Daphne.”
“Both of these were shot,” he said. “All easily available, known information, just as everyone knows the movie was initially Rated R by the MPAA.”
