Scotland First in the World to Introduce LGBT+ School Lessons

Scotland is set to become the first country in the world to teach school lessons on LGBT+ specific issues, reports the Guardian.

The move comes after the LGBTI Inclusive Education working group gave the Scottish government a list of 33 recommendations to address anti-LGBT+ bullying in schools. The government has accepted all 33 recommendations and will begin incorporating them into curriculums within the next school year.

The recommendations included a free training programme for teachers to help them establish a series of LGBT-themed classes.

“Our education system must support everyone to reach their full potential,” said John Swinney, Scotland’s Deputy First Minister. “That is why it is vital the curriculum is as diverse as the young people who learn in our schools.

“The recommendations I have accepted will not only improve the learning experience of our LGBTI young people, they will also support all learners to celebrate their differences, promote understanding and encourage inclusion.”
