Seattle firm on inclusive World Cup celebrations despite international objections

Seattle's plans to host "Pride Match" events during the upcoming FIFA World Cup, specifically around the Group G fixture between Egypt and Iran next summer, are set to proceed as scheduled, despite formal objections lodged by the Egyptian and Iranian national football federations. Organizers have confirmed their commitment to these LGBTQ+ affirming activities.

The local organizing committee in Seattle has affirmed its resolve to "move forward as planned" with various Pride activities when Egypt is scheduled to face Iran on June 26. Furthermore, FIFA has confirmed that rainbow flags, recognized as symbols of sporting and social inclusion, will be permitted inside the stadium, upholding a policy previously established.

The objections stem from the differing cultural and legal contexts in Egypt and Iran, The Guardian reports. Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, and in Egypt, morality laws are frequently invoked to prosecute LGBTQ+ individuals. The Egyptian Football Association formally communicated its concerns to FIFA's general secretary, articulating that it wished to avoid association with celebrations that "directly contradict the cultural, religious and social values… in Arab and Islamic societies." This sentiment was echoed by Iran's football federation, with its head, Mehdi Taj, reportedly voicing "objections against the issue."

Hana Tedesse, Vice-President of Communications for Seattle FIFA World Cup 2026, clarified in a statement that the planned activities are situated outside the immediate stadium operations. "As the local organizing committee, SeattleFWC26’s role is to prepare our city to host the matches and manage the city experience outside of Seattle Stadium," Tedesse stated. "SeattleFWC26 is moving forward as planned with our community programming outside the stadium during Pride weekend and throughout the tournament, partnering with LGBTQ+ leaders, artists and business owners to elevate existing Pride celebrations across Washington."

While FIFA retains operational control of stadiums on matchdays and generally prohibits banners and flags conveying political messages, it has consistently allowed symbols representing "sporting and social" values, a category under which the rainbow flag falls. This policy was notably applied during the most recent World Cup in Qatar and reinforced after initial reports of rainbow flags being confiscated. There have been no specific plans announced to acknowledge Pride weekend within the stadium itself.

The "Pride Match" concept was initiated by the Seattle committee to underscore the city’s profound history of advocating for equality and inclusion, leveraging the global spotlight of the World Cup. This initiative has included a design contest to generate commemorative imagery, with some visuals already depicting the rainbow flag proudly displayed within Seattle Stadium.

Tedesse further emphasized the organizing committee's dedication to ensuring a welcoming environment for all visitors. "The Pacific Northwest is home to one of the nation’s largest Iranian-American communities, a thriving Egyptian diaspora and rich communities representing all nations we’re hosting in Seattle," she added. "We’re committed to ensuring all residents and visitors experience the warmth, respect and dignity that defines our region."
