Senior British Army officer voices concerns over future of transgender service members

September 26, 2025

At the LGBTQ+ Defence Awards on Tuesday, Colonel Grace Sangster-Wall, the British Army's highest-ranking transgender officer, expressed grave concerns regarding the future of transgender personnel within the Armed Forces.

In a symbolic gesture, Colonel Sangster-Wall removed her military attire before delivering her keynote speech to emphasize that her remarks reflected her personal views, not those of the Ministry of Defence (MOD). She then articulated a strong critique of what she characterized as a "regression" in the rights and experiences of transgender service members.

"The MOD has 26 years of experience integrating the trans minority into service… But…there is no evidence to justify a regression in the rights, dignity, opportunity and working experience of the current serving trans minority," Colonel Sangster-Wall stated, drawing a parallel to the historical ban on LGBTQ+ individuals in the military.

As reported by BFBS Forces News, the Provost Marshal in the Royal Military Police went on to suggest that current conditions may make it difficult, if not impossible, for transgender personnel to continue their service beyond 2026. "The harsh reality is that it's unknown if, and increasingly unlikely that, I and those trans service persons that I support, will be able to serve into and beyond 2026," she said.

While the specific reasons for Colonel Sangster-Wall's concerns remain unclear, her remarks come at a time when transgender rights are under scrutiny in some parts of the world. The potential implications of her warning have sparked debate and raised questions about the MOD's commitment to inclusivity.

Colonel Sangster-Wall confirmed she sought legal counsel before making her address. Her remarks coincide with the 25th anniversary of the lifting of the ban on homosexuality in the British Armed Forces, an occasion being commemorated by the Army with a series of events.
