Serbia’s Openly Gay PM Welcomes Baby Boy into World

Serbia’s openly gay Prime Minister, Ana Brnabic, has welcomed a baby boy into the world, reports the BBC.

Brnabic’s partner, Milica Djurdjic, gave birth earlier this week to a baby boy named Igor, a statement from Brnabic said they’re both “doing fine.”

"Ana Brnabic is one of the first prime ministers whose partner has given birth while in office... and the first in the world in a same-sex couple,"her office said.

Brnabic become the first female and first openly gay prime minister of the Balkan nation in June 2017. A somewhat surprising move as the country has yet to legalise same-sex marriage.

Brnabic has been criticised previously for not doing enough for the Serbian LGBT+ community, even being asked not to attend the capital’s Pride celebrations last year.

She told the pride organisers that LGBT+ problems would only be addressed once they had tackled more important issues, such as inflation, pensions and the standard of living.

Predrag Azdejkovic, Head of Serbia’s Gay Lesbian Info Centre, has said making such a statement is “scandalous.”
