Zooey Deschanel's folk band She & Him have released two versions of their new love song, “He Gives His Love to Me” and “She Gives Her Love to Me”, both aimed at same-sex couples.
“We believe love is universal, and that love songs should be too,” the band wrote on social media.
The new song is part of MGM’s Universal Love Project, which reimagines classic love songs for gays and lesbians. The project has already drawn Bob Dylan, Kesha, St. Vincent, Valeria June, Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard, and Kele Okereke from Bloc Party.
Producer of the project, Tom Murphy, says: “If you look at the history of pop music, love songs have predominantly come from one heterosexual perspective. If we view music as something that brings people together, shouldn’t these popular songs be open to everyone?”
