Speaker for the House of Commons Makes Statement in Opposition to Birmingham School Protestors

July 18, 2019

John Bercow, Speaker for the House of Commons, made a statement criticising “bigots” and those protesting the “No Outsiders” LGBT-inclusive education lessons in schools.

“In my experience as a Member of Parliament for more than 20 years, I often find that when people say, ‘We haven’t been properly consulted,’ what they really mean is, ‘You haven’t done what I told you to do,” he said in reference to the protestors.

“Secondly, again on the strength of experience, we cannot appease bigots and homophobes; we have to confront them and defeat them.

“My strong sense is that there is unity across the House in that conviction.”

His statement was shared on Twitter and as of publishing has more than 2,000 likes and 800 comments.
