Stephen Fry to narrate documentary exploring Soho's LGBTQ+ legacy and future

British actor and author Stephen Fry will lend his voice to This is Soho, a new documentary that examines the rich history and evolving LGBTQ+ scene of London's iconic Soho district. The film is slated to premiere at MIPCOM 2025 in Cannes this October, followed by a theatrical release later in the year.

This is Soho promises viewers an immersive journey through the vibrant streets of Soho, blending observational storytelling with exclusive access to the area's most cherished establishments and the individuals who define its unique character. The documentary will feature interviews with drag artists, pub owners, and local luminaries, painting a comprehensive portrait of Soho's past, present, and future.

According to Deadline, This is Soho arrives at a crucial moment for the district. Rising rents, the closure of historic venues, and the pressures of commercialization pose significant challenges to Soho's status as a haven for London's bohemian and LGBTQ+ communities. The film seeks to explore these challenges while celebrating the enduring spirit of inclusivity and creativity that has always defined Soho.

Director Ahmed Peerbux (Grenfell: Uncovered) emphasizes the film's commitment to authenticity, stating, "Spending time with the people who live, work, and play here, we’ve sought to uncover an authentic, layered present-day portrait of London’s most iconic area — one that pays homage to its glamorous mythos while also moving beyond it."

Derren Lawford, head of Dare Pictures, describes This is Soho as "not a film about the Soho you think you know," highlighting its ambition to capture the essence of Soho's diverse communities in a way that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.

This is Soho is financed by media entrepreneur Rob Pickles, with Sphere Abacus handling worldwide distribution. The film is produced by Dare Pictures and Bad Tattoo. A theatrical run and film festival circuit are planned following its premiere at MIPCOM 2025.
