Students hold first pride parade for Mike Pence’s hometown

Students have organised the first pride festival for Mike Pence’s Indiana hometown in protest to the Vice President’s anti-LGBT+ agenda. Mike Pence is well known as a devout evangelical. In nearly two decades in politics, he has never once supported pro-LGBT+ reforms. He has actively voted against hate crime laws, gay people serving in the military, and discrimination laws that would have protected LGBT+ people.

Erin Baily, the high schooler spearheading the project, told USA Today that she hopes the event will “promote a message of inclusiveness” in opposition to Pence’s policies.

“Most people would think that all of us here are also anti-LGBT,” Bailey said, “but there are plenty of us who very much support the LGBT community and are members of the community.”

A spokesperson for Pence claimed the Vice President was supportive of the event. “Vice President Pence commends Erin Bailey for her activism and engagement in the civic process,” rep Alyssa Farah said in a statement. “As a proud Hoosier and Columbus native, he’s heartened to see young people from his hometown getting involved in the political process.”
