Study finds bisexual men are the least likely of the LGBT+ community to come out

A study in Australia, conducted by ABC’s Hack Triple J, has found that bisexual men are by the least likely members of the LGBT+ community to come out.

Only 40 percent of self-identified bisexual men said they were out of the closet, compared to 83 percent of gay men. Bisexual women were the second least likely with 48 percent of them saying they were out, while lesbian women were the most likely to come out.

Julia Taylor, of the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society, explains the results: there are “protective factors for gay and lesbian people that bisexual people aren’t privy to. If gay and lesbian people come out and things don’t go so well for them…they do have a big vocal community to find support and that’s something bisexual people don’t have.”

Taylor also explained the difference for bisexual men verses bisexual women: “More and more so bisexual women are depicted in television and literature…although it’s still minimal,” she said. “But for bisexual men it’s completely invisible…there’s a lack of role models.”
