Supreme Court Weighs Major LGBT+ Employment Rights Case

In the Supreme court, there is a big LGBT+ dispute over whether the Civil Rights Acts of 1964, which forbids employment discrimination on the basis of “sex”, also prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

“Gorsuch, President Trump’s first appointee to the high court, described the case as “really close.... Assume for the moment I’m with you on the textual evidence,” he told an American Civil Liberties Union lawyer representing a transgender woman who was fired from her job at a funeral home in Detroit.” the L.A. Times report.

HuffPost reports: “The court’s 5-4 conservative majority includes two justices appointed by President Donald Trump, whose administration has argued that Title VII does not cover sexual orientation or gender identity.”

The court will hear 2 cases about gay people who say there were fired because of their sexual orientation and a third case which involves a Detroit funeral home which, allegedly, fired a trans, after revealing plans of transition from male to female.

LGBT+ activists plan demonstrations outside the courthouse.

Rulings in the cases are due by the end of June.
