Swiss population strongly backs LGBTQ+ rights, survey shows

A new study by research institute gfs-Zurich finds overwhelming support for LGBTQ+ equality in Switzerland. In fact, 83% of respondents said they favor equal rights and protections for LGBTQ+ people, according to Blue News.

Support cut across age, gender, region, education, and political affiliation, making it a rare point of consensus in the country. Still, concerns remain. In fact, 69% of those surveyed said they are worried about rising anti-queer attacks and discrimination. By contrast, a majority of SVP supporters (57%) said they were not concerned.

The public is also calling for stronger legal protections:

• 84% want a ban on workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation.
• 72% support outlawing “conversion therapies.”

The survey, commissioned by LGBTQ+ advocacy group Pink Cross, questioned 1,010 people between April 2 and 28. Researchers confirmed the results are representative of Switzerland’s German- and French-speaking adult population.

The findings challenge a frequent claim in politics and media that LGBTQ+ communities “demand too much.” Instead, the data shows broad, cross-party backing for equal rights and protections.
