Taking the lockdown as a moment to think about the rest
March 31, 2020Coronavirus, COVID-19, lockdown or isolation, nowadays, these unusual terms are part of our common language. Our global society is sharing this crisis, walking together this path of new feelings and emotions. Empathising with thousands of people affected around the world. People losing beloved family members, having friends affected or losing their jobs.
Right now, almost no one is without worries, but the crisis has hit some communities hardest. Especially those that are already vulnerable, such as elderly LGBT+ people, refugees and the trans community.
Refugees are facing this crisis with limited funds, often homeless or in crowded unsafe living conditions and without the security of health insurance. These days the only place we feel safe is our homes, so it´s difficult to imagine a life without this protection, without a roof over your head.
“KifKif”, means “Between Equal” in Amazigh or Berber and is an NGO focused on helping LGBT+ refugees. They offer basic necessities, such as a shelter flat in Madrid, legal advice and other much needed support.
Another group in need of support is the trans community, who are currently facing a high unemployment rate, made worse by the situation with coronavirus. This community suffers every day, every year. According to a survey, “A third of UK employers are less likely to hire a trans worker”, Spain has an unbelievable 85% of unemployment in this community.

Finally, LGBT+ seniors are more likely to suffer isolation. As if this were not enough, COVID-19 has been cruel and merciless with them too.
Working with these two last communities “Fundación 26 de Diciembre” (26 of December Foundation) is a Spanish charity helping elderly LGBT+ people and the trans community. They assist with these fears, isolation and unemployment.
At present LGBT+ seniors are not attending courses at their day centre and volunteers are calling to check in with them. This is the third week confined to their homes in Madrid and this kindness is key to getting through the days.
myGwork works together with this charity, which has two amazing new projects; a rest home for LGBT+ people that will be opened at the end of this year and “Proyecto Ámbar” a job poll for trans people. As a result of this collaboration, 5 people were hired and are now working for inclusive companies, developing their careers far away from transphobia. After this crisis, I hope that they can keep their jobs and continue to thrive.
In brief, this world will be a better place if we are caring to our loved ones, but also if we are able to think and help the most vulnerable people in society.
