Taylor Swift Makes Surprise Appearance at Stonewall Inn 50th Anniversary

Taylor Swift has continued her recent strident support of the LGBT+ community by making a surprise appearance at the Stonewall Inn in New York City, just in time for the fiftieth anniversary of the riots many credit with kick-starting the gay rights movement.

Swift took to the stage with Modern Family’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson where she performed her hit ‘Shake it Off’.

“It’s an absolute honour to be here at the Stonewall Inn,” Swift told the cheering crowd.

“Thank you for being so wonderful, it’s so fun dancing with you. Happy Pride month!”

Ferguson later tweeted out to the singer: “Thank you for everything you do for the LGBTQ community.”

The appearance comes on the tail of Swift’s new single ‘You Need to Calm Down’, which tackles homophobia, Twitter trolls and references LGBT+ organisation GLAAD.

GLAAD has since reported an increase in donations.

“Taylor Swift is one of the world’s biggest pop stars,” said Anthony Ramos, Director of Talent Engagement at GLAAD.

“The fact that she continues to use her platform and music to support the LGBTQ community and the Equality Act is a true sign of being an ally.

“‘You Need to Calm Down’ is the perfect Pride anthem, and we’re thrilled to see Taylor standing with the LGBTQ community to promote inclusivity, equality, and acceptance this Pride month.”

Swift has been stepping up her support of the LGBT+ community, recently penning an open letter criticising Donald Trump and calling on her state to support the Equality Act.

She also recently donated $113,000 to LGBT+ charities in her state, as well as an undisclosed “very generous” amount to GLAAD.
