Teachers can request students use "Mx" to address them, says UK Education Secretary

In a recent statement, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson addressed the ongoing discussions surrounding gender identity in schools, affirming that teachers have the right to request to be addressed as Mx, a gender-neutral title. The Secretary's comments come amidst anticipation for comprehensive guidelines on trans-inclusive practices in education, which have been under development for over a year.

Phillipson emphasized the government's commitment to providing practical guidance for classrooms, acknowledging the complexities surrounding gender identity. "I think teachers can make that request," Phillipson stated, referring to the use of Mx as a professional title. "But of course, what we'll be looking at is making sure that people are able to exercise their views on this topic too."

LBC reported that a Department for Education spokesperson clarified that while teachers can express a preference for the title Mx, it is not mandatory for students or colleagues to use it. "While teachers can make such requests, the Education Secretary was clear it’s not something that they can insist on," the spokesperson noted, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect within the educational environment. "Teachers and pupils should be treated with respect."

The development of comprehensive trans guidance for schools has faced delays, partly due to ongoing legal considerations and the need to incorporate findings from Dr. Hilary Cass's review on gender questioning children. Phillipson stressed the importance of aligning the guidance with Dr. Cass's recommendations to ensure the well-being and support of all students.

The forthcoming guidelines are expected to address a range of issues, including appropriate sex and relationship education, and are being developed in consideration of a recent Supreme Court ruling on trans spaces. The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is also expected to release updated guidance in light of the ruling.

Phillipson acknowledged concerns from parents regarding the content of sex and relationship education and reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring age-appropriate and supportive learning environments for all students. While a specific timeline for the release of the trans guidance remains uncertain, the Education Secretary assured the public that the government is dedicated to ensuring the guidelines are thorough, sensitive, and aligned with the best interests of students and educators alike.
