Thailand’s public health ministry will allocate more than 145 million baht for trans health care

Following the legalisation of same-sex marriage, Thailand's Public Health Ministry is setting aside 145.63 million baht (approximately £3.4 million) to support health services like hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for trans individuals, according to ‘Them’.

This allocation was approved by the National Health Security Board as part of the 2025 budget planning. According to the Bangkok Post, these health services aim to serve around 200,000 trans people from Thailand’s estimated trans population of 314,808. Deputy government spokesman Anukool Pruksanusak stated that the Public Health Ministry’s initiative to provide gender-affirming healthcare seeks to reduce health disparities nationwide by focusing on the physical and mental well-being of “sexually diverse individuals,” as reported by the Bangkok Post.

Earlier this week, thousands of LGBTQ+ couples in Thailand celebrated their unions as the country officially recognised marriage equality on January 22, making Thailand the first nation in Southeast Asia and the third in Asia to do so. Under the new law, same-sex couples are granted the same legal, financial, and medical rights as heterosexual married couples, including rights related to inheritance and adoption.
