But for the LGBT+ community, it is also important that the area is tolerant, that there is some gay presence in the community and that health care professionals do not discriminate against the LGBT+ community.
Here are some of the cities in the USA that offer a good combination of all of the above so that LGBT+ retirees can enjoy their retirement, according to ‘Forbes’.
Asheville, North Carolina
This progressive city is one of the most gay-friendly cities in the southeast. For mountain lovers and a milder weather, Asheville is worth a look.
Atlanta, Georgia
Although most areas of the Deep South aren’t particularly welcoming of LGBT+ people, Atlanta offer a cosmopolitan environment where several neighborhoods have numerous businesses that serve the LGBT+ community.
Austin, Texas
Although a politically conservative state, Austin has the third-largest percentage of LGBT+ residents in the country. It is famous for its live music scene, with more music venues per capita than any other U.S. city.
Bloomington, Indiana
As ‘Forbes’ writes, “Bloomington scores a perfect 100 on the Municipal Equality Index (MEI), which examines how inclusive municipal laws, policies and services are of LGBT+ people who live and work there.” Bloomington has a good gay community with an annual Pridefest and an LGBT+ film festival.
Columbus, Ohio
Columbus is open-minded, cultured and definitely LGBT+ friendly. German Village is a quaint neighbourhood that is popular with gays and lesbians.
Dallas, Texas
Dallas has a strong and vibrant LGBT+ community. It is also home to the Cathedral of Hope, the largest LGBT+ church in the world.
Denver, Colorado
Denver is the USA’s ninth largest per-capita LGBT+ population, and there is a thriving LGBT+ and cultural scene.
Moab, Utah
Moab town has been welcoming the LGBT+ community for many yers, when over 500 of its 5,000 residents turned out to participate in Moab’s first-ever Pride parade. This remote city is in a high desert region and holds chilly winters and hot summers,
Orlando, Florida
Orlando has a well-established gay community and whilst it may have gentrified neighbourhoods, the general cost of living is particularly low.
Portland, Oregon/Vancouver, Washington
In the past years Portland has become a ‘favourite’ for the LGBT+ community, which is the second largest per-capita in the country. It enjoys mild winters and beautiful summers although it is rainy most of the year.
Tampa and St. Petersburg, Florida
The Tampa Pride festival is an annual thing and South Tampa there are numerous LGBT+ venues and businesses. St. Petersburg hosts the largest LGBTQ pride festival in the state and is host to world-class museums and a growing art scene.
