The joy of community at Brooklyn Pride

Mia Birkhead, VP of Ad Operations at Ogury, spoke to myGwork about her experience of Brooklyn Pride. Mia has spent the past six years leading teams responsible for campaign execution, performance optimization, and revenue growth. "One of my favorite Pride events of the year is Brooklyn Pride. It takes place the second week of June in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn and I can only describe this as one of the most joyous events I attend each year. It’s a gathering of queers of all ages, filling the streets of 5th Ave, starting with the afternoon street festivities and ending with an epic parade at dawn.

When I lived in Park Slope, just off of 5th Ave!, my wife and I would host a pre-Pride brunch at our place with friends and then we’d all walk over to 5th Ave to join the festivities. We would usually park ourselves in front of the iconic Ginger’s bar, one of the last standing lesbian bars in the US!, and friends from all NYC would join us for drinks throughout the day. There was so much laughing and dancing and pride on that street. Then at dusk, we would line up for the parade.

Brooklyn Pride overflows my cup as it’s a time to reflect on our friendships and the joy of the LGBTQ+ community. Being surrounded by this support with music and friends and allies is a reminder of the power of community."
