There’s no better time than the start of the new year to focus on our goals and think about what we might like to achieve, both personally and professionally. myGwork spoke to Daniel Bird, Showbiz Reporter, Paula Mosquera, HR Advisor, and Stuart Jordan, HR Business Partner, from the team at Reach plc about their new year’s resolutions and how they plan on staying motivated over the next twelve months.

Do you have any professional or personal new year’s resolutions?
Daniel: I think my New Year Resolution will be to put myself before work, rather than logging on if I'm ill or having a low day mentally or physically, to stop and rest up rather than putting on a work face.
Stuart: To lose 1 stone in weight & continue with my fitness plan, cut back on naughty food and drinks!

What are your top tips for looking after your mental health throughout the year?
Paula: Set boundaries – with work but also with friends and family members and stick by them.
Remember to prioritize yourself, it is not selfish – you cannot be any good to anyone else if you haven't looked after yourself – you can't pour from an empty cup
Make time for enjoyment, exercise and social time. Also try new things, visit new places. Can help keep life interesting and exciting
Seek help if you need it – there are so many resources out there.
Daniel: To look after my mental health, I try to switch off outside of work, not check emails, make sure I'm around the right group of people - if not, remove myself, bit niche but if I'm not feeling too good, don't drink alcohol because it will only delay the feelings and that hangover will hit harder than ever. Escape for a few hours, go to the cinema, go for a walk or go see friends.
Stuart: Have a plan for your week ahead and commit to sticking to it. Lists are a great tool to stay on track.

How will you be staying motivated throughout the year?
Stuart: Keep any agreements you make, promise yourself to achieve them - don't be afraid to tell yourself well done, when you achieve something, be proud of this, and when you don't achieve something, don't be disappointed, strive to start again.
Daniel: To stay motivated, I'm always looking for the next challenge. Have I landed a good exclusive? Great, can there be a follow up from it? Another person to wade in on the story. I think just taking each day as it comes is a huge bonus rather than dwelling on what could have been, focus on how you can learn from that lesson.
