They/Them pronouns featured in new Harry Potter game

Yesterday marked the release of a new game set in the Harry Potter universe, but a character customisation option has already sparked discussion.

‘Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions’ launched on all platforms, making it the first Harry Potter universe game since Hogwarts Legacy debuted in early 2023. The game allows players to fly on brooms, either solo or in co-op mode, to engage in Quidditch matches, with the goal of climbing the leaderboard and securing the House Cup.

With the game’s release, more details about its features, particularly its customisation options, have emerged.

According to Jordan Middler on Twitter, in addition to selecting your Quidditch role—Beater, Chaser, Seeker, or Keeper—players can also customise their hair colour, outfit, and accessories. These are standard customisation features. However, according to ‘Gaming Bible’, Middler highlighted that players can select their preferred “pronouns for commentator dialogue,” including the option for they/them pronouns.

Providing non-binary players the choice to use their preferred pronouns is a positive inclusion and should be standard in any game offering such options. However, similar to the discussions when this option was included in Starfield, some gamers have expressed dissatisfaction, which is not unexpected.

Nonetheless, ‘Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions’ appears to be performing well, with a “mostly positive” rating on Steam from over 500 reviews.
