Thousands March in Scottish Pride Events Over the Weekend
October 7, 2018Thousands of people took part in two different Scottish Pride events over the weekend, the BBC reports.
Hundreds of people attended the first ever Hebridean Pride, a small town consisting of just 8,000 people. While at least 3,000 people attended Proud Ness in Inverness – well above the 300 attendees that were expected.
James Mackenzie-Blackman, chief executive of the Eden Court Theatre that hosted the Proud Ness event, wrote on twitter: “HUMBLED. We estimated 300. Police Scotland say between 3,000-5,000 came to celebrate.”
The Inverness pride was marred by some controversy when Donald Morrison, an evangelical member of the Free Church of Scotland, started a petition to ban the march.
“A lot of people are unhappy with the event on moral and religious grounds so we are protesting it on the strongest possible terms,” he had said.
“It’s nothing against personal individuals who want to live their life that way,” he added. “There is no hate or loathing towards them, that is not why we are protesting it is strictly on moral grounds.
“This becomes evident especially in city centres when they thrust lewdness in the faces of men, women and children alike by frolicking unashamedly on rainbow-coloured floats making obscene gestures.”
Regardless, the pride was an incredible success.
