Marsh's Head of Business Development for Financial Lines Facultative, Vinicius Mercado spoke with myGwork about what IDAHOBLIT means to him and what tips he has to offer organizations celebrating the occasion for the first time. Please introduce yourself and tell us about your role at your organization
I’m Vinicius Mercado, and I am part of Guy Carpenter’s Facultative Reinsurance team in the UK. I am the Head of Business Development for Financial Lines Facultative, where I actively engage with clients and pursue new opportunities to better serve them. I joined the company in October 2023 and am extremely excited about the future ahead of us. Additionally, I co-chair our Pride CRG/Network for the UK, a role I have held since mid-2024.
What does IDAHOBLIT mean to you?
IDAHOBLIT is, first and foremost, a day that reminds me of my journey from being bullied in secondary school to a place of great acceptance and openness regarding my sexual orientation. It is a moment for awareness and visibility about the challenges many people face simply for being LGBTQ+ individuals. Finally, it is a wonderful opportunity to educate others and take action to improve the inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community.
How do you mark IDAHOBLIT? Has this differed over the years?
My observance of IDAHOBLIT varies from year to year, ranging from internal communications on the company’s channels to large events featuring external speakers, and even community activities in public schools, which I particularly enjoyed. The important part is to be active and vocal about it.
If you have marked it previously, can you please tell us about one of your favourite years?
My favourite year marking IDAHOBLIT was in 2018 when, at my previous employer, we visited a secondary school to discuss the topics of diversity and inclusion in the corporate environment. We had a very engaging conversation with the students about discrimination and bullying. It was particularly emotional for me as it reminded me of my own days in school.
What tips would you have for organizations in the UK marking IDAHOBLIT for the first time?
For any organisation marking IDAHOBLIT for the first time, I would suggest first engaging leadership in the initiative. The buy-in from senior leaders is key to the success of such activities. To achieve this, some preparatory work may be necessary, such as conducting an educational session with leaders on the importance of these discussions and what can be done to promote inclusion. Regardless of the type of activity taking place, gathering feedback from participants or employees is essential for improving future initiatives.
What role can an LGBTQ+ network play in organizing and boosting IDAHOBLIT events?
LGBTQ+ networks are a driving force behind such events and initiatives. These networks can develop thoughtful strategies to educate employees and create safe spaces for the community. With the support of HR and senior leadership, these networks can bring visibility to the topic from the perspective of the affected community, thereby increasing awareness and engaging allies.
