Tokyo has Japan’s largest Pride event to date

May 9, 2018

The Tokyo Rainbow Pride march reportedly had the largest ever attendance for an LGBT+ event in Japan, with over 7,000 people joining in the celebrations. The theme for this year’s event was “Love and Equality” with many floats and outfits decorated with pro-LGBT slogans.

Organisers of the event told press: “Everyone is equal in love. We seek no special rights, but the same thing, the same way. The freedom to love. That basic freedom is what we want to achieve.”

In an optimistic sign, lawmakers from both the ruling and opposing parties were in attendance. Kanako Otsuji, an LGBT+ rights activist and member of the House of Representatives for Japan, said: “I was happy to walk alongside lots of friends today. But we must also work toward developing LGBT-friendly laws.”

The march took place in the Shibuya and Harajuku districts of central Tokyo and finished off a nine-day celebration.
