March 1st is Zero Discrimination Day, an annual event celebrated by the UN and several other international organisations. The day promotes legal equality throughout the world and aims to create awareness of discriminatory practises still taking place.
The day was first celebrated in 2014, created by UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibe and was commemorated with a major event that year in Beijing.
“(We want people to) make some noise around zero discrimination, to speak up and prevent discrimination from standing in the way of achieving ambitions, goals and dreams,” UNAIDS said in 2017.
The day has been used to spark conversation about a range of topics, including stigmatisation against those suffering from HIV/AIDS, as well as discrimination against LGBT+ people. In the past Indian LGBT+ activists used the day to provoke discussions around repealing section 277 of the Penal Code and decriminalising homosexuality, which they successfully did last year.
