Safà Hichri, Customer Service Specialist for Patagonia, talks to myGwork about the top 5 ways we can better support and empower neurodiverse people in the workplace and promote inclusivity.
I believe that the most important way to empower the neurodiverse community in the workplace are:
1. Education & Awareness
Provide training for all employees, particularly managers, recruiters, and HR professionals, on neurodiversity and how to best support neurodivergent individuals in the workplace. By increasing awareness, we can cultivate a more inclusive environment and foster a sense of belonging.
2. Clear Communication of Accommodations
It's important for organizations to not only offer accommodations but also to actively communicate these options to employees. Many neurodivergent individuals might not feel comfortable requesting accommodations if they're not aware they are available.
3. Safe Spaces & Support Networks
Establish a dedicated space (such as a Teams group, Slack channel, or hotline) where neurodivergent employees can come together, share their experiences, and find support.
4. Sensory-Friendly Work Options
Consider implementing quiet work setups, such as reduced lighting days or designated quiet rooms, to assist employees in managing sensory overload and enhancing productivity.
5. Redefining Success Metrics
Acknowledge that diverse minds operate in various ways. Traditional success metrics and societal expectations may not accurately reflect the achievements of neurodivergent employees, so developing more flexible and inclusive evaluation methods could be very beneficial.
