The dressing up, partying and sheer extravagance of it all provides an opportunity for many in the community to express themselves in a fun and carefree way. But before you start putting out your Jack O’ Lanterns, make the most of the season by taking part in the many events geared towards LGBTQ+ people this fall.
1. National Coming Out Day
We all hope that the future holds a society in which coming out is unnecessary. Where family and friends will already openly accept the identity of their loved ones without shock or surprise. Where queer people won’t have to face the internal struggle as they come to realize things about themselves at such a significant stage of life. With every passing generation, it feels as though that future is getting closer.
Until then, the LGBTQ+ community have found ways of making this crucial step more bearable for those in the closet. National Coming Out Day provides an opportunity for queer people to share their identity. Whether it’s a social media post to the world, or to one friend or family member, every coming out story is an action of bravery in its own way.
For allies, this day is a good chance to openly discuss your support for the LGBTQ+ community. Any closeted friends or family members around you may be inspired to speak up, with the knowledge that they would be accepted. Any promotion of this day is also a great way to show allyship, so that any unaware LGBTQ+ people can make use of the opportunity it provides.

4. Ace Week
Asexuality is a frequently overlooked identity within the LGBTQ+ community. With a lack of representation in the media, and even facing disregard from within their own community, it is increasingly important to openly celebrate this identity and encourage pride in it.
Formerly known as Asexual Awareness Week, this campaign is dedicated to spreading awareness and changing how the world views the asexual community, for the better. Taking place between October 23-29, the week aims to provide a greater understanding of those who identify within the asexual spectrum and is a great opportunity for allies and other LGBTQ+ members alike to show support.
5. The Black & Blue Festival
Montréal will be hosting its annual Black & Blue Festival, geared towards raising money for HIV/AIDS trusts and for LGBTQ+ charities. Taking place every Canadian Thanksgiving, the event is hosted by the Bad Boy Club Montréal has been held for over 30 years. It is currently the largest gay-benefit dance festival in the world.
This year the festival is taking place at the La TOHU Theatre on October 9 and is being dubbed ‘BLACK AND BLUE 360’, owing to the circular shape of the venue. Attendees can expect themed raves, circus events, electronic dance music, digital arts and much more. The event has been delayed for the past two years due to lockdown, so the 2022 festival is expected to be more extravagant and impressive than ever!
