Top ways to support our non-binary peers in the workplace

July 11, 2024

In an increasingly diverse work landscape, it is essential to create inclusive environments where everyone feels welcome and supported. One group that often faces challenges in traditional office settings is the non-binary community. As allies, it is important for us to actively support and uplift the entire LGBTQ+ community, so here are some top ways to be a good ally to non-binary people in the workplace.

1. Educate yourself

Take the time to educate yourself about what it means to be non-binary. Understand the terminology, experiences, history and challenges that non-binary people have and will face. This will help you be more empathetic and informed in your interactions.

2. Use correct pronouns

Respecting and using the correct pronouns is crucial. It’s good to get into the habit of confirming all your colleagues’ pronouns and make a conscious effort to use them correctly. Mistakes can happen – just apologize and correct yourself, and try to learn for next time.

3. Listen and validate

Create a space where your non-binary colleagues feel comfortable sharing their experiences and concerns. Listen actively, validate their feelings, and provide support without judgment. Sometimes, simply being a supportive listener can make a huge difference.

4. Advocate for inclusive policies

Support initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion within your organization. Where you can, advocate for gender-neutral bathrooms, inclusive language in company documents, pronouns in email signatures, and inclusive healthcare benefits for your non-binary colleagues.

5. Stand up against discrimination

If you witness discrimination or microaggressions against your non-binary colleagues, speak up and address the issue. This could be deliberate misgendering, passive aggressive comments, etc. Show solidarity and support for your colleagues by actively combating acts of antagonistic behavior in the workplace.

6. Celebrate Diversity

Organize events and initiatives that celebrate diversity and promote understanding among colleagues. For example, you could help create opportunities for non-binary voices to be heard and valued in your workplace in an LGBTQ+ employee resource group or put together a panel on non-binary perspectives.

By being a proactive ally to your non-binary colleagues, you can help create a more inclusive and supportive workplace for everyone. Remember, allyship is an ongoing process that requires continuous learning and action. Together, we can build a more equitable and welcoming environment for all professionals, irrespective of gender identity.
