Will Ferrell and his longtime friend Harper Steele star in a touching new documentary.
On September 5, Netflix released the first trailer for ‘Will & Harper’, a documentary the duo filmed during a cross-country road trip after Steele, a former head writer for ‘Saturday Night Live’, revealed her trans identity.
The trailer features both funny and moving moments from their journey as they reflect on their time working together at ‘SNL’, discuss how Harper accepted her gender identity during the pandemic, and engage in conversations about life as a trans woman with people they meet along the trip.

As ‘People’ writes, ’Will & Harper’ was featured at the Sundance Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, and Telluride Film Festival this year. At Telluride, Steele commented that the film is about how “friends should come together” during “moments of change or crisis.”
Netflix’s official description of the film states that Steele came out to Ferrell in 2021, which was more than 30 years after they first met while working at ‘SNL’.
The synopsis reads, “In this intimate, honest, and heartfelt documentary, Will and Harper hit the open road together to process this new stage of their friendship and reintroduce Harper to the country that she loves – this time, as herself.”
“Over 16 days, the two drive from New York to L.A., visiting stops that are meaningful to them, to their friendship and to America. Through laughter, tears and many cans of Pringles, they push past their comfort zones as they re-examine their relationships to these spaces, and to each other, in this new light.”
Ferrell and Steele discussed the making of the documentary with Advocate magazine, highlighting how their mutual love of humour aided their connection.
Ferrell told the outlet, “I think it helps that Harper and I have known each other for close to 30 years and we really got to know each other through the language of comedy. I also think we only really tease and joke about the ones we love the most. I believe that as long as there is a base of sensitivity and understanding, some gentle teasing helps demystify the topic.”
The documentary features appearances by Seth Meyers, Tina Fey, Kristen Wiig, Colin Jost, Will Forte, Molly Shannon, Tim Meadows, and Paula Pell.
‘Will & Harper’ will be shown in select theatres starting September 13 and will be available on Netflix on September 27.
