Trailer for historic Emilia Pérez film released
August 28, 2024On Monday, Netflix unveiled the trailer for Jacques Audiard’s musical drama ‘Emilia Pérez,’ featuring Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez.
The film is already generating Oscar buzz, having won the jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival, along with the best actress award for Saldana, Gomez, and co-stars Karla Sofía Gascón and Adriana Paz.
At 32, Gomez was brought to tears when ‘Emilia Pérez’ received a nine-minute standing ovation at Cannes.

As ‘New York Post’ writes, this was the longest standing ovation at France’s 2024 cinema event for any movie premiere. ‘Emilia Pérez’ tells the story of a Mexican cartel leader, portrayed by Gascón, who is pursuing gender-affirming surgery. Gomez plays the role of Gascón’s on-screen wife.
In the film, the ‘Good for You’ singer dons a blond bob.
Édgar Ramírez is also part of the cast in this musical crime comedy.
According to the streamer’s official description, “This odyssey follows the journey of four remarkable women in Mexico, each pursuing their own happiness. The fearsome cartel leader Emilia (Gascón) enlists Rita (Saldana), an unappreciated lawyer stuck in a dead-end job, to help fake her death so that Emilia can finally live authentically as her true self.”
Gomez shared with Variety at the festival that she was captivated by ‘Emilia Pérez’ after reading the script.
“It was captivating, it was heartbreaking, it was really moving to me,” she expressed.
The Grammy-nominated artist also enjoyed the musical aspect, telling the outlet, “I had a blast and I love the songs. I think they’re really beautiful.”
In recent years, Gomez has shifted her focus from music to acting.
She stars in the Hulu comedy series ‘Only Murders in the Building’ alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short.
Gomez is also set to appear in a cameo for the ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ spinoff series titled ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place,’ which she is producing.
On the cinematic front, her next major project involves playing Linda Ronstadt in an upcoming biopic.
“I wanted to be an actress, I never really intended on being a singer full time, but apparently that hobby turned into something else,” Gomez mentioned on the “SmartLess” podcast earlier this year.
“I don’t think I’m the best singer, but I do know how to tell stories and I love being able to make songs.”
‘Emilia Pérez’ is set to open in select theatres on November 1, before becoming available for streaming on Netflix starting November 13.
Gomez will also appear in Season 4 of Hulu’s ‘Only Murders in the Building,’ which premieres Tuesday.
