The trailer for ‘Boy Erased’, the gay conversion drama starring Lucas Hedges, has just been released. The film is based on Garrard Conley’s 2016 memoir and is directed by Joel Edgerton. It stars Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe as two Baptist parents who send their 19-year-old son to a California-based Christian ex-gay program.
The official synopsis describes the film as “the true story of one young man’s struggle to find himself while being forced to question every aspect of his identity.”
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Edgerton said: “The film satisfies the dramatic and salacious stuff that interested me, but it also had an emotional resonance to it that I felt didn’t just make it a dark and nihilistic story. Garrard’s story is so full of redemption.
“My approach and treatment of this story was that there were no villains, that everyone thought they were doing the right thing.”
The film will also feature a small part for gay singer Troye Sivan who tweeted: “This movie is gonna be so important and I’m honoured to be part of it.”
