Trans actor Maikol Roque makes historic MCU debut in record-breaking Spider-Man film

Transgender actor Maikol Roque has made his feature film debut in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, becoming one of the very few out trans performers to appear in a Marvel Cinematic Universe release and the first openly trans person of color in an MCU film.

Roque plays EJ, the son of detective Jean DeWolff, portrayed by Liza Colón-Zayas. The film has quickly become a global phenomenon. Roque acknowledged in the same comment thread that other trans actors of color have also worked in Marvel projects, particularly on the television side. The MCU series Jessica Jones included Indian American actress Aneesh Sheth as an assistant to the title character, while Spider-Man: Far From Home featured Zach Barack, a white trans actor, as one of Peter Parker’s classmates. Within this context, Roque’s role stands out as a landmark for an out trans person of color in an MCU feature film.
