Trans woman denied access to bathroom in DC restaurant

Trans woman and HRC employee, Charlotte Clymer, was denied access to a women’s bathroom at a DC restaurant and forcibly removed when she didn’t comply with security.

Last weekend Clymer was out with friends celebrating a bachelorette party when she needed to use the restroom: “I reached the door, an attendant stuck out his arm and said he needed to see my ID,” she wrote on Twitter. “When I asked why, he said that ’female’ must be on an ID to use the women’s restroom. No one else was asked.

“He insists I need to show my ID, I tell him that’s not happening, and demand to see what law he’s citing. He refuses to show me the law and instead says, ’You being in there will make women uncomfortable.’ We’re in the way of everyone, and a lot of people are watching this.”

Clymer then pulled up anti-discrimination laws on her phone, but the attendant threatened to call the police, then asked her to leave.

Since sharing her story on twitter, Clymer has received more than 20,000 likes and 9,000 retweets. The restaurant has reached out to Clymer and had talks with her and Casa Ruby, a local LGBT+ community centre. Clymer has said the talks were fruitless, but the restaurant released a statement saying otherwise. She plans to bring the issue to DC’s Office of Human Rights.

“I know a case worker who works on things like this,” she told the Washington City Paper. “They can help me process the claim. I don’t want this to happen again to any LGBTQ person in this city.”
