Transphobic Group Removed From Cardiff Pride by Police
August 31, 2022Transphobic group Get The L Out UK, which stands against "queer politics and transgenderism,” was removed from Cardiff Pride by police over the weekend.
A police officer was filmed telling the anti-trans group of women – who were holding banners that read 'transactivism erases lesbians' and 'lesbians don't like p*****s" – that they would have to leave.
Pride Cyrmu, organizers of the event, have made a statement that the group “interrupted” the march and were not invited or registered to attend.
In the video, the police officer can be heard saying, “At the moment […] this group of people is causing a confrontation between different groups of people.”
To which the group replied, “We're lesbians, it's Cardiff pride.” The police officer responded, “Whatever you are […] at the moment, is causing confrontation […] we are going to remove you from the road.”
The incident has sparked controversy online in a time when trans rights are continuously under threat. Many across social media are claiming the group were removed “because they were lesbians,” despite them having crashed the event, blocking the march, and confronting trans attendees and allies.
“Today's Pride Cymru parade was all about celebration and LGBTQ+ rights,” Chair of Pride Cymru, Gian Molinu, has said. “Despite a small group of people interrupting the march, they were drowned out by shouts of solidarity and the community and spectators. There is no place for hate at Pride. And as our parade said today loudly and clearly, 'trans rights are human rights.'"
