Troye Sivan Criticises America’s Gay Conversion Therapy Laws in TV Interview

Troye Sivan has used a recent American TV talk show appearance to criticize the country’s lack of laws banning gay conversion therapy, reports Billboard.

Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday (November 12) the Australian singer was promoting his new film Boy Erased – a drama about gay conversion therapy, also starring Nicole Kidman.

“When I first read the script, I was like: this is probably set in the 90s or something like that,” he said.

“It was set in 2004, and (gay conversion therapy) is still happening in 2018.

“In 36 states across the US, it’s still completely legal to send your kid off to conversion therapy, and it’s been proven to be so dangerous and hurtful and obviously ineffective.”

Sivan partnered with The Trevor Project back in August to help promote the organisation’s “50 Bills 50 States” campaign.

“We’re trying to get 50 bills in 50 states to prevent youth from going through conversion therapy,” he said.
