Troye Sivan's ‘Something to Give Each Other’: The Full Unleashed Potential of Queer Confidence

Australian pop star Troye Sivan's third studio album, ‘Something to Give Each Other,’ takes listeners on an exhilarating, empowering journey through his most sexually confident and queerest collection of songs to date. From the intoxicating lead singles to the more niche, heartfelt album tracks Sivan has delivered a boundary-pushing record that shows the full potential of unabashed, queer confidence.

The record opens with lead single ‘Rush,’ a mesmerizing display of pure pop brilliance. From the moment this track came out, Sivan set the tone for the album's exploration of proud, sexual freedom. The accompanying music video adds another layer, showing the unrestrained joy of queer liberation and happiness, simultaneously helping him achieve one his biggest hits to date.

Sivan kept the good vibes coming with second single ‘Got Me Started,’ which immediately hooked listeners with its addictive Shooting Stars sample. As a song now recognized for its use in meme culture, it was a risk on Sivan’s part to interpolate the track into his own, but something about it just works. In some ways, it feels as if the original track was made for this song, capturing the feeling of a newfound spark of energy from a potential love interest and supplying the biggest earworm of the album.

‘One of Your Girls’ emerges as Sivan's magnum opus – not just on this album, but from his entire musical career so far. Taking an unprecedented dive into the experience of lusting after what one can't have – in this case, hot straight guys - the track is both cheeky and vulnerable, boosted by an exceptional music video. Sivan dresses in drag and lap-dances actor and singer Ross Lynch, and the resultant tone of the video is astounding, proving his sexuality and appeal transcends the boundaries of gender.

The album takes an unexpected approach in the funky, French ‘In My Room’ featuring Guitarricadelafuente. An ode to the bittersweet, soul-crushing joy of crushing on a guy, it offers a unique experience that diverges from both Sivan's previous releases and any current chart-topping hit. As well as showcasing Sivan's versatility as an artist, it’s also simply impossible not to dance to.

‘Still Got It’ adds an emotional, momentary (and necessary) slowdown to the album, describing lingering feelings for a past partner. He recounts those recurring, harsh emotions when you come across an ex-lover and find that they still possess all the traits that made you fall in love with them in the first place. Sivan explores the versatility of vulnerability on nearly every track of the record, none more than on this heartbreaking pop-ballad.

In the production-heavy ‘Silly,’ Sivan shows off the extent of his vocal range and ability, providing seamless transitions from falsetto to head voice in a captivating self-duet effect. The track adds a unique dimension to the album, continuing that same fun threaded throughout the record but from a completely different production standpoint.

Closing track ‘How to Stay With You,’ channels a very ‘The 1975’ vibe, and acts as an unexpectedly sweet and gentle conclusion to an album filled with themes of pure lust, love, and excitement. As the final track of the record, it feels as though it represents Sivan’s forward-looking perspective, hinting towards his determination to continue evolving not just as an artist, but as a human being. It may be difficult for Troye Sivan to top the sheer, unique quality of ‘Something to Give Each Other’ moving forward, but given his versatility, timelessness, and openness to constantly grow, he is perfectly capable of doing just that.
