Trump Praises Far-Right Brazilian President on First Visit to White House

Brazil’s far-right President, Jair Bolsonaro, has made his first official visit to the Trump Whitehouse where the two have lauded their shared values, reports the Independent.

President Trump heaped praise on Bolsonaro, the controversial Brazilian President who has made many homophobic remarks during his career. “I would be incapable of loving a gay son. I prefer that he die in an accident,”he said in a 2011 interview.

“No father would ever take pride in having a gay son… Pride? Happiness? Celebrate if his son turns out gay? No way,” he later reiterated in a 2013 interview with Stephen Fry.

He also equated homosexuality to paedophilia, “So let’s respect the paedophile’s right to have sex with a two-year-old? Would that unite [Brazil]?”

Trump congratulated Bolsonaro on his “tremendous victory” as they “have many views that are similar.”

WhileBolsonaro added that Brazil and the US would stand together to “ensure liberties in respect to traditional family lifestyles, in respect to God our creator, against the politically correct attitudes and against fake news.”

Trump also praised Bolsonaro for using the term fake news: “You look at the networks, you look at the news, you look at the newscasts – I call it fake news.

“I’m very proud to hear the president use the term ‘fake news.’”
