The Trump administration have announced an official starting date for their ban on transgender people serving in the military. They plan to introduce the new law starting February 21.
It is unclear how this new law will affect several cases already in progress against the ban.
Major David Eastburn, speaking for the Pentagon, told reporters that they would give recommendations, but the ultimate decision about the ban would come down to the White House.
The Human Rights Campaign Press Secretary told Gay Star News: “There has already been extensive and thorough study of allowing transgender people to serve openly. A process which led the Pentagon two years ago to announce that the United States would join eighteen other nations that allow open trans service.
“There are currently thousands of transgender people serving in the US military. Their skills and service are already providing invaluable to our national security. In their repeated attempts to implement and justify this cruel and unconstitutional policy, the Trump-Pence Administration has been the only source of disruption on this issue.”
