Trump Vows to “Eliminate” HIV/AIDS in State of the Union Address, Campaigners Urge Caution

President Donald Trump used his State of the Union address to pledge an end to HIV/AIDS in the United States by 2030, although experts and campaigners warn caution, reports Vox.

Delivering his speech to congress yesterday, he said: “No force in history has done more to advance the human condition than American freedom. In recent years we have made remarkable progress in the fight against HIV and AIDS.

“Scientific breakthroughs have brought a once-distant dream within reach.

“My budget will ask Democrats and Republicans to make the needed commitment to eliminate the HIV epidemic in the United States within 10 years.

“Together, we will defeat AIDS in America.”

However, HIV/AIDS has been a low priority for Trump in his first two years of office. In 2017 he completely dismantled the Office of National AIDS Policy and dismissed everyone on the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS.

There were no other mentions of LBGT+ issues in his address, including the upcoming ban on transgender people serving in the armed forces.
