Trump’s Ban on Trans People Serving in the Military to Begin April 12

A final injunction has been lifted by the DC Court of Appeals last Tuesday, essentially clearing the way for Trump’s proposed ban on transgender people serving in the military. The ban can now be implemented from April 12th, reports Bloomberg.

“We are pleased the court cleared the way for the department of defence to be able to implement personnel policies it determined necessary to best defend our nation,” said Kelly Laco, a spokesperson for the US Justice Department.

“Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming … victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail,”Trump tweeted back in July 2017, when he first proposed the ban.

Shannon Minter, the legal director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, has said they will continue to fight the ban: “Today’s ruling only drives home the urgency of continuing to fight this destructive policy, which we will continue to do in the district court.”
