Two gay men arrested in Egypt for “spreading debauchery”

Egypt continues its crackdown on the LGBT+ community with two arrests last Saturday morning. Two men were arrested in a warehouse in Giza Governorate, south of Cairo, for allegedly planning to hold a gay concert: a security guard and the man who rented the space. The pair were released Monday morning due to lack of evidence.

While homosexuality isn’t explicitly illegal in Egypt, the country does have anti-gay propaganda laws which forbids any positive representation of LGBT+ people. Since September of last year, the government has been going to lengths to enforce the law.

More than 60 people were arrested at a Mashrou Leila concert in Cairo last year after someone was caught waving a rainbow flag. Their charges included “debauchery”, “inciting sexual deviancy” and “joining an outlawed group”. Amnesty International reported many of the men arrested were forced to undergo anal probe torture with some of the men receiving six-year jail sentences.
