Two gay men have been the subject of two separate horrific New Year’s Day attacks in Chile, reports the Movement of Homosexual Integration and Liberation (Movilh).
José David Muñoz Vargas, 51, was forced to sit in a bathtub filled with boiling water after being assaulted – resulting in severe burns.
“We are in contact with family members who tell us that the attack was homophobic, so we will continue to provide guidance and help in whatever way they wish,” said Rolando Jiménez of Movilh.
While another man, 24, who wishes to be anonymous, was attacked in the city of Valparaísoafter two people heard him talking to his partner on the phone. The assailants allegedly put cigarettes out on his hands.
“Everything was going well until the young man started talking on the phone with his partner,” said Diego Ríos of Movilh.
“The assailants began to insult him because of his sexual orientation, as well as beating and torturing him.
“We call on local authorities to help victims of this type of abuse…and to educate LGBTI youth about their rights and about the dangers they face, in order to prevent further abuses.”
